Help the People in Need
About Africatown International
Africatown International (ATI) provides essential services to people in need emphasizing support for those experiencing poverty and homelessness at an disproportionate rate. We believe in a community based integrated response to homelessness that involves working in collaboration with hundreds of King County service providers that are providing a myriad of services. This includes substance abuse treatment mental health services job training employment assistance funding for housing and utilities childcare and a host of other services.
(ATI) shares its name with other Africatown organizations which are based in most metropolitan areas throughout The United States. However the largest Africatown is in Guangzhou China. There are other renditions of Africatown in Seattle but (ATI) is working independently as the regional grassroots leader in homelessness “diversion and prevention”.
Africatown International chose the name due to the history of Africatown which formed in Mobile Alabama. The name Africatown does not belong to one local entity but is a philosophy that can be utilized to advance an agenda that improves the lives of African Americans.
Africatown is a historic community founded by slaves in Mobile Alabama along the Gulf Coast. This the place where the last known cargo of Africans landed in 1860. Their landing marked the last recorded attempt to import Africans to the United States for the purpose of slavery.
Africatown not only enabled the emancipated Africans to own land and build houses it also was the place where they could maintain their spirituality their dignity and their self-esteem in an often-hostile Southern environment. The founders built a community to enable the descendants of slaves to achieve economic prosperity.
In short Africatown represents freedom and economic justice for African Americans. This is a concept that does not belong to any particular Africatown organization and one that Africatown International embraces to advance our agenda
